Scary moments this afternoon.
We know the winds could pick up very strong in a very short time. So we briefed to be careful when the sea was getting rougher at Cabo de Santa Pola.
Briefed how to get out of this situation, if caught by this accelerating winds, actually what to do if you left the site too late. What to do if you made the mistake flying it too long, what to do if you were too greedy. What to do.
No big ears, too late for that. No more forward speed with speedbar, way too late for that. Get high, as high as you can, then turn 180 degrees, fly downwind, as far as you can and land behind the take off, enough fields down there to go land.
And it all happened. We were all flying the cliffs, cabo de Santa Pola. And in the distance there were clouds, angry looking wild clouds. A few kilometers in sea we could sea white horses building rapidly.
For most locals it was the time to get down quick quick quick. I was very glad my Kath made the right decision and was down right away before anything was said.
Andy Shaw talked his students down as well, superb.
But there were still some pilots in the air. Damn.
Winds were racing now. 40 to 50 km winds. We saw all pilots flying backwards now. And thank god some listened to the briefing, and did exactly what was told after they made this mistake.
It were some scary moments I tell you. You saw pilots flying backwards under the meanwhile angry cloud, in the awful windgust.
We raced to the fields behind the take off. Had calls from every pilot that they landed fine.
I tell you a whole lot of stress of my back.
We are humans and make mistakes. But ! It was all briefed that this could happen today. Many other pilots were already down. The sea as the best indicator for wind straight in front of you.
Still, again we are humans and make mistakes, but ! You fill in the rest.
Every pilot should analyze, think what happened, and realize that this was nothing to be proud of. Saying that most important is that everybody in the end was safe on the ground .... is not enough for me.
This is a blog and my words are my weapons of choice.
Be careful out there always.
