www.theyr.net is the website I will use again from now on. Paying a 50 euro anual subscription fee, you get the best information, windwise, rainwise, temp wise and cloudwise.
Before this website was free, but since almost a year you have to pay. And I am happy to pay if it is only 50 euros a year. It is really worth it, especially for us who have to be on the right spot on the right time. Not to lose a minute of flying, not to dissapoint our visiting pilots.
More charts like 500 hPa, isobarmaps, are used as well. But also, and this is important, your local knowledge. You feel the heat in the morning, you watch the sea, nerveus or calm, are the plants wet, lot of flies, etc... etc... . It all helps to determine the weather locally.
Like today, a nerveus sea, overcast, high cirrus cloud, with now and then a sunny spell.
No flying, too strong.

I did not expect to much today to be honest but we were close to Coll de Rates in the Jalon-Valley anyway. So why not having a look...? And it dit not look sooo bad. I was surprised. Over the take off a big, big open blue spot in the sky. But all arround quite dark clouds. Hmhh. So we decided to eat something and to see how everything develops. And after another half an hour seeing everthing stable I decided to go out.
When I was prepared for take off it was still a bit cloudy. More surprising for me was that there was almost no wind in our Baby-Coll, the take off more down the hill. Patience. After another 15 minutes waiting fully prepared and sweating there came in a small breeze and the first try - BINGO! Before taking off I was already looking for alternativ landing places as I could not see me coming untill the usual place today. Anyway. At the beginning I had to fight a lot for every meter of height.
But more and more the sky cleared up and the sun could heat up the ground. It has helped that I could use the whole mountain for me alone this time because I was realy scratching the walls looking for the smallest lift. But after half an hour it was done and I have passed the top of the hill. And then going straight to the inner-valley to look for thermals of this nice big Cumulus. And it was day like made for me. I could find them, I could turn them untill the top. Actually I could have tried my first XC today. But I wanted to use the comfortable height to get familiar with my new glider, nothing else. Afer almost 2hours I went down to land because my wife and little daughter were waiting for me patiently so long already.
Until then I had the opportunity to to get to know my new Nova Tattoo better trying out a lot of things. And I am completely convinced. Respect to Nova, what a glider! I like it! I even had to put ears to come down finally. Again and again the glider went high. This was definetely MY day today. Hope that I do not have to wait too long again for such an experience.

Hi Dominique,
Fantastic for you. And glad you like the Tattoo. Although it is an old glider from Nova, it still does the job. As you know it is replaced by the RA, which has its comments pro and contra.
At 2 pm I got a message that maybe the valley of Jalon was working. But with a hour and a half drive to the hill, and gusting up to 45 km per hour that moment, decided to stay put.
Inland in Alicante, even in Caudete it was too strong. Surprisingly Col was not strong enough. But it happened before.
What height did you get actually and how strong were the thermals ?
Did you have to make ears to get down, because of the thermals or because of the prevailing wind ?
Intereseting to know if we have similar meteo conditions the upcoming days.

Hi Nick,
I have achieved almost 1.100m yesterday. That means about 550m above take-off-level.
The strongest thermal was 3.8m/s. The valley was hot! Thermals took me up everywhere above the landingfield. Windspeed was stronger but still very moderated finally.
The Tattoo was thrown on the market in 2005. That was quite important for me. I mean that I do not progress with a too old modell. I know there is the new Ra on the market now. But it is brandnew and the Tattoo has proven its qualities already. For me important too. Right now I have the impression that it fits to me personally.
Monday Eva was flying in Palomaret with Federico and Quique. But they had to wait a while untill the wind has calmed enough!
For today I could imagin that it is possible again in Coll but for sure it will be stronger. Definetely! The sky is open over there.
